With so many of us struggling to take enough time for a proper break nowadays it comes as no surprise that more and more recently wed couples are using their honeymoon as a good excuse for a holiday at the same time. After months of planning, perhaps even years, it is also a great time to justify going all out and spending that extra little bit to not only celebrate your recent union but also to reward yourselves for all the late hours, stressful phone calls and number crunching you’ve done in the build up to the big day. There are few events that you’ll go through as a couple that justify such an extravagant trip but if you are ever going to do it, your honeymoon is certainly the best time to indulge yourselves and spend some alone time together as a married couple. These trips do come at a price though, one that is often excessive, so if this once-in-a-lifetime trip sits a little outside of your budget perhaps ask for contributions from your wedding guests in place of a wedding present to cover a part of the trip to make things a little easier for yourselves financially as you begin married life.
Outrigger Beach Resort, Mauritius
Found in the nature reserve of Bel Ombre, the contemporary resort sits on the southern coast just 100m from a beautiful coral reef where you can take part in snorkelling or kitesurfing. That’s not all you’ll find at the resort though, here you can expect not one, not even two… no, not three but FOUR swimming pools to dip your toes into including one just for little ones so if you’re honeymoon is a family affair you are well catered for at this beach resort.
What to expect at the resort
If lying around the pool lapping up the sunshine gets a little too much you have plenty on offer to keep you entertained. If you’re a fitness enthusiast you could try your hand at kitesurfing, get involved with water sports on the pristine private beach, brush up on your tennis skills or become a volleyball pro on the courts. Game of golf more your scene? They have that too, and for the more adventurous quad bikes are available as well. Don’t worry if you have been working hard in the gym prior the big day and want to keep the momentum going, the Outrigger Beach Resort also has a fitness centre for you to make the most of available to guests.
Sport not your thing? Not to worry; Outrigger Beach Resort is the perfect place to relax and unwind, getting rid of all of the stress that comes hand in hand with planning a wedding. The on-site Navasana Spa offers aromatherapy, massages and even complimentary yoga sessions so you can stretch out and refuel no matter where you are in the world. Then take a boat trip and take in the sights by getting on board one of the glass-bottom boat tours the resort offers, ensuring you see every wonder this destination has to offer.
What is nearby?
Although the resort itself is the stuff of dreams, make sure you take a trip to Chamarel Falls and Black River National Park nearby (just a 15-minute drive away to be exact). Chamarel Falls are a sight really not to be missed and can be seen either from the upper deck at the Chamarel Seven Colored Earth reserve for a view of the landscape in all its glory, or for those who would prefer to get up close and personal with the natural beauty you can follow the trail towards the bottom of the falls to take a dip in the shallow waters below. Considered by many as ‘the best waterfalls in Mauritius’ these are definitely one to add to the must-see list while you’re on the beautiful island.
If you want to explore what else this island has to offer, book yourself on a tour of the Black River National Park either by foot or by car (but avoid driving around on the weekend if you can as the road’s get very busy then and can be tricky to navigate) to see just how beautiful this dense forest is which covers an impressive 2% of the island’s surface. Oh, and keep an eye out for some of the wildlife native to the island… Mauritius kestrel, tropic birds and fruit bats are all known to be in the area!
Where to eat
Whatever your taste may be you will easily find something to suit at Outrigger Beach Resort. With a number of bars and restaurants at your fingertips – six to be exact – you can expect a beachside restaurant serving Eurasian dishes, freshly caught seafood in Willie’s Rum & Crab Shack, interactive international dining with Mercado that boasts an adjoining wine room, then there’s The Plantation Club wine bar for tastings and there’s even a tea library for when you fancy something a little slower-paced.
In the evening
As the temperature begins to cool you can take a stroll in the tropical gardens gazing upon the breathtaking Indian Ocean views before soaking up the atmosphere with a glass of wine or two. Indulge in a cocktail before making your way to the beach for a relaxing evening of live creole jazz and sega rhythms.
