When I found Ollie’s Studio on Instagram I fell in love, so imagine how happy I was when Ofe said she would love to work on a post together. But this post is a little different… make sure you read until the very end for a little surprise!
Hi Ofe! Tell us a little about yourself…
My name is Ofe and I’m a finance professional turned designer. I used to work in banking and finance, but when my first child was born I couldn’t bear the thought of missing out on watching her grow. It’s crazy because I never saw myself as the stay at home Mum type. Then it was time for her Christening and I decided to DIY everything, even the invitations, despite not being a previously crafty person. My DIY touches received so much praise that I figured it was worth exploring. So I taught myself graphic design, studied calligraphy, and built my design business. I feel very lucky to be able to stay at home with my kids while doing work I really, really love. I currently call Cheltenham home and live here with my very patient husband, sassy toddler daughter and yummy baby boy.
What a transformation! Finance pro to design supernova! So why ‘Ollie’s Studio’?
My business is named Ollie’s Studio after my daughter Olivia and we are a boutique modern calligraphy and design studio. I offer calligraphy and stationery for weddings and events, branding for small creative businesses, creative workshops and most recently, gorgeous hand torn silk ribbon
What made you choose weddings to explore?
Weddings are all about love and beauty and they give you so many avenues to be creative in. I love how each wedding is personal to the couple getting married and I love being able to help them put their stamp on their day. There’s a really great hardworking industry behind it and I’m so privileged to be part of it.
What do you love most about working in the wedding industry?
I love creative challenges and being in the wedding industry positively encourages trying new things. There’s also an overwhelming community over competition vibe. Some of my favourite people are actually my direct competitors but there’s never been anything but support from them.
Could you describe who the Ollie’s Studio customer is?
My ideal customer knows the value of quality wedding stationery, loves colour and isn’t afraid to think outside the box. They’ve also got eclectic taste, like me. Wedding stationery should be heirloom quality because it’s one of the few non-perishable parts of the wedding day. I’ve actually got my parents’ wedding invitations from 30 years ago!
Why did you decide to specialise in calligraphy and paper goods?
Calligraphy is such an engrossing and relaxing pastime and I really enjoy doing it. It just made sense to start doing it professionally as calligraphy and paper goods are just made for each other.
When did you decide to move into silks and ribbons, and why?
Last year I created a really beautiful suite for a bride with lots of inserts and knew that a regular paper bellyband just wouldn’t do it justice. I brought up the idea of silk ribbon and she went for it. To keep within her budget, I decided to diy it. It came out so well that I was hooked! I don’t think I could use regular ribbon anymore lol. I decided to offer it with my stationery and it just made sense to add it to my offering.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Fashion, florals, Pinterest, architecture, and of course… my couples. They tend to have really great ideas!
What would be your biggest piece of advice for the bride-to-be?
Your wedding is about you and your partner, not your friends, family, and definitely not social media. Don’t get stressed out trying to keep up with trends, and do your own research. Wedding magazines are great for inspiration but are usually way off when it comes to wedding budgets (especially stationery)!
